Wednesday, June 1, 2011 Baby chicks need vaccinations too
Rowly Horn
I have just returned from visiting our farms. This visit coincided with vaccination of our young pullets. Just like us, our little hens need vaccinations at an early age to protect them against common illnesses. This means the laying flocks will be healthier and there is much less risk of disease. Just as in people, prevention is much better than treatment.
And it's a skilled job! A specialist team is involved with carefully catching every hen to allow the vaccine to be administered. This is the last of a series of vaccinations carried out during their growing period commencing at the hatchery. Most of the early vaccinations are given through their drinking water.
Our consulting Veterinarian recently reviewed the current vaccination programme and made further recommendations for improvement. He has also taken blood samples from a few older birds to measure their resistance to disease based on our current programme. It's a process that is closely monitored and we are always looking for any chance to further improve it's effectiveness on the hen's well-being.
